Using various historical records and mātauranga Māori, Our Ancestors enjoyed loving whānau relationships explores whānau life, including how wāhine and tamariki were safe and loved prior to colonisation.

This booklet also looks at how tikanga kept order and protected whānau, hapū and iwi and how women were influential, strong and valued in traditional Māori society.

E Tū Whānau Charter of Commitment

The Charter is a public commitment to positive change built on the acknowledgement that all violence towards whānau is unacceptable within te ao Māori.  Signing the E Tū Whānau Charter of Commitment is a step that anyone can take to encourage debate, action and change.

The Rope of Life that connects and strengthens whānau

‘The rope of life’ represents a DNA helix to demonstrate that the values of E Tū Whānau are handed down from the ancestors. They are strengthened by each generation, to be passed to future generations.

This resource is conceptual representation of the ways in which E Tū Whānau partners with others to support community mobilisation for positive change. Taking inspiration from the whakataukī Kia uru kahikatea, te tū – To stand as a grove of kahikatea, the analogy illustrates the complex, holistic and interconnecting nature of the work E Tū Whānau does alongside others to uplift and strengthen whānau. E Tū Whānau moemoeā

Our moemoeā speaks of strong, resilient whānau who treasure their past and their future, can make choices and are in control of their destiny. Te mana kaha o te whānau!
