Radio Ngāti Porou – living our kaupapa

Big shout out to the best Ngāti Porou radio station in the world and E Tū Whānau song competition winners, East Coast Breevaz for this video of the group performing the winning waiata , ‘One Love’ for friends and whānau at the prize giving ceremony held on 10 July at Radio Ngāti Porou HQ in Ruatoria.

When Pakanga Te Whitu, Puna Manuel and Greyson Mauheni were asked where the inspiration for their song came from, they replied “from you, our people, our way of life, our stories, our slang, our hapū, our iwi, our community and our people.”

“A hearty crowd turned out on a rainy day to tautoko the group and the competition and we were all extremely proud that the three winning entries in the competition had Ngāti Porou connections,” said Radio Ngāti Porou CEO Erana Keelan-Reedy.

Tommy Waititi, who won second prize for writing and performing The Ol’famz-alee , is from Cape Runaway and Maioha Panapa, a Ngāti Porou tane living in Hamilton, took third prize for writing and performing Home.

Brent Mio from E Tū Whānau presented East Coast Breevaz with two cheques, $5000 for first prize and $2000 for the most votes on the E Tū Whānau Song competition Facebook page, and commented on the way the station embraced the E Tū Whānau kaupapa.

“The Radio Ngāti Porou kaupapa, the smart, catchy and thoughtful lyrics in East Coast Breevaz’s winning song, and this video are brilliant examples of the E Tū Whānau spirit. It’s whānau all the way. They inspire us and, hopefully we can spread some of that inspiration around Aotearoa,” he said.
